STEP 1 is to draw lightly and create a "line of
action". In this case we will draw a curved line. The
"line of action" indicates action or posture of the
character.

NOTE: when starting your sketch be sure to draw
lightly. You may need to erase your lines later.

STEP 2 draw a circle on top of the line. Keep in
mind it doesn't need to be a perfect circle. It can
be an almost sideways oval shape.
STEP 3 draw a smaller circle just below the one
you just drew.
STEP 4 just under the smaller circle draw a
round one, slightly bigger. Don't worry about
overlapping them.
STEP 5 draw two curved lines across the large
circle on top. These lines will guide you when
you are ready to draw the face.
STEP 6 on each side of the body draw three
different circles. They are the upper arms, lower
arms, and hands.

Note: don't be afraid to draw the part of the arm that
would eventually be hidden from view. This technique
is important because it helps you to see what the
other arm is doing.
STEP 7 next draw two two long circles for each of
the legs. Then two bean shapes for feet.

Note: The leg and foot further away can be drawn
slightly bit smaller then the one closest to you. This
gives the illusion of perspective appearance.
STEP 8 is one of the fun steps, but also one of the
challenging one. Drawing the face and ears. This
is where the guidelines come in handy. It helps to
keep your face center on the head.
STEP 9 is a little tricky. Drawing the hat.

Note: the rim of the hat usually rests just above the
eyebrows.

also add a line around the waist that gives you an
idea where the smurf's pants would be. Oh, and lets
not forget his tail. Can't have a tailess smurf running
around, can we?
STEP 10 draw fingers on the smurf's hand.
STEP 11 is the step you've been waiting for. Grab
a black pen (or pencil crayon) and draw over the
lightly drawn pencil guidelines.

Note: watch carefully that you only draw the lines you
want to be shown.
STEP 12 erase the pencil lines. Now you have a Smurf.
Yah!
STEP 13 get a blue pencil crayon and color in
his body. A white crayone for his hat, pants,
and eyes. That's it!
STEP 14 is completely optional, but shading helps
bring depth to your drawing. A bit of shading on
the furthest leg, arms, under the feet, and even a
bit on the hat. Now your smurf seems more alive.
STEP 15 if possible the most important step of them
all. Signing the picture with your name and date.
Everyone should know who drew the smurf and
what year you drew it in. Why a date? So you can
compare this drawing to any future ones you may
draw. You can see how much you progress over the
months/years.
STEP 16 to draw other smurfs all you need to
do is add special features that helps identify
them from the others.

i.e. a heart for Hefty.
STEP 17 or glasses for Brainy.
STEP 18 but if you really want to be silly
you can put Brainy's glasses on Hefty... :o)
