It all started in 1958, when a very talented singer/songwriter named Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. recorded "The Witch Doctor", which became a very big hit. It was that hit song that helped pave the way to the introduction of The Chipmunks in December with "The Chipmunk Song" (otherwise known as "Christmas Don't Be Late"), a Grammy-Award winning hit, selling millions of albums! |
It was this same year when The Chipmunks, and Mr. Bagdasarian (who went by the stage name David Seville), made their first public, on-screen appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, where The Chipmunks were introduced as hand puppets. |
The popularity of The Chipmunks lead them to their first TV series; the primetime, animated musical variety comedy called The Alvin Show, which enjoyed an initial run from October 4, 1961, to September 12, 1962, on CBS, who continued to broadcast the series until 1965. |
Sadly, in 1972, Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. died of a heart attack, but that didn't mean the death of us, as Ross's son, Ross Bagdasarian, Jr., and his wife, Janice Karman, kept the legacy alive, and in 1980, released a new Chipmunk album, entitled Chipmunk Punk. |
That was only the next chapter in our legacy, in 1981, Ross Jr. and Janice teams up with animation pioneer, Chuck Jones, to present a new primetime, animated holiday special called A Chipmunk Christmas. This saw the beginning of The Chipmunks' make over. |
The success of the special lead to a new TV series, NBC's long-running Saturday morning cartoon, Alvin and The Chipmunks, which lasted an incredible eight seasons, from September 17, 1983 to September 1991. Ahem... this is also when I stepped into the picture! Oh yeah... and my sisters, Jeanette and Eleanor... when The Chipettes were introduced to the world as well! |
The success of that series, was the inspiration for our very first, feature-length, animated movie, The Chipmunk Adventure, which debuted in theaters in May of 1987, and was a huge smash! |
Our next movie was Alvin and The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein, which was released on video September 28, 1999. |
Alvin and The Chipmunks Meet The Wolfman also went straight to video August 29, 2000. |
Next came the DVD movie Little Alvin and The Mini-Munks, in which we were little preschoolers. And as a change of pace, we were puppets, rather than cartoon characters. It debut was Nov. 11 2003. Again we were introduced as puppets. |
Yes, after half a century, I'm still going strong... I mean WE'RE still going strong, but it wouldn't be possible, without hard work, and dedication of Ross Bagdasarian, Jr., and Janice Karman; so, on behalf of The Seville Library, I proudly present to them The Golden Chipmunk Award, and would like to thank them for keeping me alive for all my fans to adore! Um... I mean, US alive for OUR fans to adore... |
It is our way to say 'thank you' for your creativity, and big dreams in order to keep us alive for our adoring fans. Thank You! |
2007 saw a BIG change in The Chipmunks, when Alvin, Simon, and Theodore were given their latest makeover, introducing them to new audiences as realistic-looking, CGI chipmunks, playing opposite My Name is Earl's own Jason Lee as David Seville. Justin Long, Matthew Gray Grubler, and Jesse McCartney provided the voices for Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, respectively. Naturally, the movie lacked something very important. ME! Um... that is to say... me AND my sisters... which is why I'm, like, so totally excited to announce that my sisters and I are going to star in the 2009 "squeakuel"! We're not sure at the moment, but it's rumored that I will voiced by Drew Barrymore, while JoJo and Miley Cyrus voice my sisters, Jeanette, and Eleanor. |
